Religious Education

Autumn Term

2011

Dear Parent(s),

As we return from the summer break the children are experiencing lots of new things, different classes, teachers and new work.

The focus of our term’s work in Religious Education is God as Creator. We will be exploring the topics Homes and Families, Signs and Symbols, and Visitors. The children will also spend a week studying Judaism

HOMES AND FAMILIES

In the first topic, the children explore the importance of the home and family in their lives. They will learn about the Family as the DomesticChurch and recognise the loving presence of God in every home.

Suggestions for home activities

Make a collage using family photographs of all the significant family members—grandparents, parents, children, aunts, uncles etc. who show God’s love. Write underneath it -

“We show God’s Love to one another”

Include those who have died.

SIGNS AND SYMBOLS

In the next topic children are learning about the signs and symbols connected with Baptism and in Key Stage 2,  Confirmation as well.

The symbols used for Baptism are water, oil, candles, a white garment, prayers and promises

The symbols used in Confirmation are oil of chrism, prayers and promises

Suggestions for home activities

Light a candle and say together the family prayer of the church  - the Our Father

     *   light the baptismal candle     given at your child’s baptism if you have one.

Talk to someone who has been to a Baptism and/or Confirmation about their memories of this celebration

VISITORS

The final topic of the term is Visitors. This topic takes us into our Advent season, a time to prepare for the celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas. The children will look at the importance of recognising Jesus as a very special visitor and preparing to welcome him into their lives and their homes.

 Suggestions for home activities

Discuss with the children how your family welcomes visitors to your home.

Find out about some Christian symbols for advent e.g. advent wreath, calendar, Jesse tree.

Look for an advent calendar on

www.missiontogether.org.uk

Domestic Church - This phrase is used by official church documents to show that the Family (the Domestic Church) is the smallest unit of the Church as a whole.

Sacraments -

Baptism/Confirmation    These are two of the  Christian initiation  sacraments. Baptism is the beginning of new life in Christ. Confirmation is its strengthening.

Advent  -  The word literally means “coming”. It is the period of four Sundays before Christmas, during which time we prepare for Jesus’ coming, both at Christmas and at the end of time.
