Switch off fortnight – Energy Action Day

As you know last week we switched off all the electricity to see how this would impact our daily lives. Much to the children’s amazement the classrooms were still warm, they could still see and they could all carry on with their usual learning. Harry (from Unicorn Class) commented that ‘we don’t really need to use all the lights everyday. Maybe next week we could try using less!’

As part of our Energy Action Day all classes spent a day looking at energy, especially electricity. They discovered how electricity was made, what it is used for, the impact of using too much electricity and things we can do as individuals and as a community to help reduce the amount of energy we waste.

The day was a great success and all the children thoroughly enjoyed the energy themed activities. The children also had an opportunity to speak to a representative from ‘Ethical Solar’, the company installing our solar panels.

Here are some examples of activities children were taking part in around the school…

Imp class were thinking about items that use electricity and those that don’t.

Sprites were thinking about wind power and making windmills

Unicorn and Dragon class were working together to think about how we can insulate our rooms so we don’t waste energy on heating

Griffins and Phoenix were thinking about solar energy by creating models that either spin, light up or move. They then powered these using solar panels.

From the 21st November to the 2nd December the whole school will be taking part in ‘switch off fortnight.’ During this time we will be thinking about the amount of energy we use in school and how we could reduce what we use. On Wednesday 23rd November we held a ‘switch off day.’ On this day we switched off all electricity in an attempt to raise awareness of the amount we use.

All children and teachers came to school wrapped up warm and taught normal lessons on an extraordinary day.  The dark November day proved to be ideal and children, teachers and parents were able to realise just how much energy we use on a daily basis.

Do you want to get involved? Have a look at some of these home activities…. YOU can make a difference too!!
